History of CCGA by The Founder
Over the winter I met with the General Manager of Wildwood Green and Wake Forest Country Club and propositioned him with the idea of bringing Wake Forest Country Club into play for the “Just Us” group. He was very open to the idea and said that he had no problem with us taking our act, so to speak, to Wake Forest Country Club as well. So in March of 2004 we added Wake Forest Country Club and set a schedule for 2004. We began to play from March thru August. It was our goal to play six times during the season. By now, we had some where in the neighborhood of around 34 players. While playing at Wildwood Green on one of our scheduled events, I met Kelvin Robinson, Dirk, Dan Jones and Ray Daye. They asked me about “Just Us” and indicated that they would like to play with us sometime. When they came aboard, Kelvin mentioned that he knew other guys that would perhaps be interested in joining us too. The number rapidly grew to above 50 players. We finished that year by having our first catered meal and had an open discussion about continuing our get togethers. It was then decided that we would commence to reconvene in March of 2005, with the same calendar format.
In 2005 the interest in the group grew tremendously and by mid season we were up to roughly 73 players. This was the first year that skins and trophies were instituted. To make it fair we develop 3 different flights, Red, Black and Green. With these three different flights we were able to put everyone in a flight with similar players of the same ability. By this time, we had players with different levels of abilities and knew it would not be fair if we all were grouped together. That’s were the fun began because no one had to worry about being in competition with the better players. Three times during 2005 we catered lunch, along with just sitting around to pray and fellowship. This is when the stories really got good. Like many would say, “I missed that shot because I was in between clubs” or “I read that putt to break to the right, didn’t you see the same thing man.” The best one was when someone said, “if that shadow had not appeared, I probably would have made that par.” The evening still held excitement! Who would leave with the trophies and the money? By skins and trophies being added, it was a wonderful Grand Finale in 2005. We sold raffle tickets for the first time for a buck a piece and we used the money to buy items from the Pro Shop and raffle those off at the year end banquet which was held at Wake Forest Country Club. We took pictures of the trophy presentation and just had lots of fun. As a result, we decided to call our selves the “Just Us Golf Group”.
In 2006 over the winter, some of the “Just Us Golf Group” mentioned what a wonderful time they had in 2005 with some of the fellas, making our numbers grow even more. Scheduling took on a hold new different animal. We went from “Just Us Golf Group” to, “J.U.G.G”, because it was easier to communicate to others when they asked about the group. In 2006 we added a third course to our list. We began to play at Bull Creek in Louisburg, and it appeared that we were off and running. Sometime afterwards, a group of us talked about the future and felt it was time to make us official. Therefore we registered with Wake County at the Registered of Deeds as the “Just Us Golf Group” better known as J.U.G.G. As time went on during this season, it was evident that we had attracted a very diversified group of professional men. We began to talk and saw a need to accomplish more in addition to playing golf. We began to discover areas where we could contribute our services in the form of scholarships, youth programs, and community work along with the elderly etc. Our goal was hopefully to make lives better. After a little thought we decided that if we were going to grow and become a servants to people, we had to develop a game plan. The first was to change the name from J.U.G.G. to the “Capital City Golf Association” and then repeat the process of having this registered with Wake County.
Today we have approximately 97 members on the books and I use that term loosely. When we began this year, after playing golf, we began to discuss and recommend things that needed to be done to serve masses of people. Though, we wanted to take things slowly. We also wanted to make sure that suggestions to the members would be something that everyone would be excited about and hopefully all would want to continue to support “CCGA”. This year we refined our flights and instituted handicaps that are being handled by Dexter Howard and Kelvin Robinson, making it fair for all to win Skins, Closest to Pins and the Longest Drive. We even added an additional day to the Grand Finale, 2 courses, 2 days (Wake Forest Country Club and Wildwood Green) 36 holes. We ended up at Wildwood Green for our year end banquet where we again had a lot of fun and just fellowshipped with one another. By the end of the banquet we decided to take this group to the next level and officially hold a true membership drive, elect a real Executive Board of Director and form a Corporation. The vision had become very clear that we could play golf as a group together and put plans in place to begin serving the youth of Wake County. Everything that you will see and hear in the near future is a result of “Capital City Golf Association” growing to become a group to serve the masses of Wake County and possibly beyond.
